Bespoke Nissan Interstar Glass Frail Luton conversion

When one of our long-standing customers needed a vehicle capable of transporting large glass units, window frames and doors between installations, they came to us looking for something far more practical than a standard van setup.

The business carries fragile products alongside tools, equipment and additional stock every day, so the vehicle needed to balance protection, storage space and accessibility without making loading and unloading more difficult for the installers using it.

Working alongside specialist converters, we supplied a bespoke Nissan van conversion designed specifically around the way this customer operates day to day, helping create a setup that was safer, more practical and better suited to the demands of regular installation work.

Creating safer transport for glass units and frames

One of the main priorities for this new Nissan van conversion was finding a way to facilitate the transport of large glass units and frames securely without losing too much usable storage space inside the vehicle.

To achieve that, the conversion includes an external frail system fitted to the side of the vehicle, allowing larger products to be carried safely outside the main load area while freeing up more internal space for tools, equipment and additional stock needed throughout the working day.

The frail system was also designed with day-to-day usability in mind. A fold-down shelf can be collapsed away when not in use, while the shelf itself can also be lifted to allow wheel access during maintenance without needing to remove the frail completely.

Protecting fragile products during transport

Inside the vehicle, the conversion includes two internal frails fitted with wooden tie rails designed to help protect delicate glass units and frames during transport.

With products as fragile and high-value as glass, protecting them properly while the vehicle is on the road was one of the build’s top priorities. The internal frail setup helps keep frames secure and stable during transit, reducing movement inside the load space and helping minimise the risk of damage between installations.

At the same time, the vehicle still needed to remain practical for the customer’s day-to-day workload. The layout leaves ample usable space behind the frails and within the Luton pod for tools, installation equipment and additional stock, helping ensure the vehicle works as both a secure transport solution and a practical working vehicle throughout the day.

Designing the vehicle around everyday usability

The rear barn door setup was specifically chosen to maximise rear entry height, making it easier for the customer to load and unload larger window and door frames throughout the working day. With products of this size, unrestricted rear access was an important part of making the vehicle practical for regular installation work, particularly when handling awkward or oversized frames on-site.

The overall body width was also carefully considered during the design process. Even when the external frail is fully loaded, the driver can still maintain visibility through the extended door mirrors, helping ensure the vehicle remains safe and practical to operate day to day.

A specialist conversion built around the customer’s workload

While this particular build was completed on a Nissan Interstar chassis, the conversion itself can also be adapted to other long wheelbase chassis depending on the operational requirements of the business.

At The Van Discount Company, this is exactly where bespoke conversions become valuable. Rather than forcing specialist trades to adapt around a standard van setup, the vehicle can instead be built around the practical demands of the work being carried out every day.

Designed around the way you operate

For this customer, the finished Nissan Interstar Glass Frail Luton did exactly what it needed to do. It gave them a safer, more practical way to transport glass units, window frames, tools, and installation equipment between jobs, with a setup designed around how their team works every day.

But this isn’t a one-off solution that only works for one customer or one vehicle. The same body type can be built on any long-wheelbase chassis, so if your business needs a similar setup or something completely different, we can help you create a specialist commercial van conversion tailored to your requirements.

If you know exactly what you want, we can build it to your specification, from dropside vans and curtainside vans, to Luton vans, traffic management vehicles, tipper vans and other specialist commercial builds. If you know what your van needs to do but you’re not sure what the right setup looks like, that’s where our experience comes in. We’ll help you find the right chassis, design the right body and build a vehicle that’s made for the work you do every day.
